The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) has announced that dredging on the west bank of the Mazaruni River has commenced and is expected to conclude on December 15, 2022.
The information was relayed in a notice to mariners and published in yesterday’s Stabroek News. The activity will be conducted south of the Teperu Crossing, in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region.
MARAD informed that the activity will see the use of Cutter Suction Dredger SD-20851 which would display the international signal for vessels engaged in such activities. It added that the dredging area covers 0.2 square nautical miles and advised mariners to stay clear of the vessel and “navigate with extreme caution when in the vicinity.”
Communication can be made to the vessel or the Georgetown Lighthouse on VHF Ch. 16.
During a brief comment yesterday to the Sunday Stabroek, Director-General of the Maritime Administration Department, Stephen Thomas said that the dredging activity is being executed by a private company to clear the way for shipping.
He declined to provide the name of the company or confirm whether it was to facilitate quarrying operations within the area.
There are several quarrying operations in the Mazaruni area.
