A 42-year-old man was on Saturday night killed by a speeding car on the Blankenburg Public Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
The dead man has been identified as Azaad Khan of Lot ‘S’ Blankenburg.
The driver of the vehicle drove away after hitting the man but was subsequently apprehended.
According to the Guyana Police Force, the accident occurred just about 7:45 pm in the vicinity of the Blankenburg Nursery School. The Police said that a black Toyota Allion motor car was proceeding west along the southern side of the public road at a fast rate and collided with Khan who was crossing the road at the time.
The Police’s statement related that as a result of the collision, Khan fell on the southern side of the road and his left leg was severed and landed in a yard four houses away. His motionless body was picked up by Community Policing Group members and the Police and transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The man’s body was also positively identified by his relatives and subsequently escorted to Ezekiel Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
In a subsequent statement, the Police said that Commander for Regional Police Division #3, Assistant Commissioner, Mahendra Siwnarine confirmed that the vehicle bearing registration number PTT 952 and the suspect, Vickey Balgobin have been held. Police say that the 28-year-old driver has since admitted that he “panicked” and fled the scene.
Investigations are ongoing and charges are expected to be laid soon.
