Corentyne carpenter drowns while catching crabs for children

A carpenter was on Wednesday morning discovered dead along the Corentyne foreshore after leaving home on Tuesday afternoon to catch crabs for his children.

Dead is Chandshakar Singh, 40, a carpenter, of Lot 2 Number 74 Village, Corentyne. According to information gathered, Singh, a father of two, left home around 4 pm on Tuesday to head to the Number 73 Village Koker to catch crabs for his children as he would often do.

However, after 6 pm passed on Tuesday and Singh did not return home the family became worried and ventured to the koker to search for him. However, according to Singh’s brother no one knew where he was.

The family then continued searching and around 8 pm on Tuesday found where he had left his bicycle along the foreshore along with his clothing before entering the water.

Stabroek News was told that the family desperately searched for hours and returned home around midnight after not locating the man.

They returned to search early Wednesday with a boat and around 8.30 am they were informed that Singh’s body was noticed about six feet away from the water’s edge next to the koker.

Police were immediately informed and the man’s body was removed. According to relatives, no mark of violence was noticed on the body.

A post-mortem examination which was later done revealed that the man died from drowning, relatives noted yesterday.

Singh was described as a kind and hardworking person who enjoyed spending time with his children.
