Dear Editor,
I find it unusual that the Government of Guyana hasn’t officially issued a statement on the unprecedented floods that have devastated millions of Pakistanis.
The UN and the OIC have called on the global community to render assistance to the people of Pakistan.
These extreme changes in weather patterns in Pakistan have never been witnessed in modern times.
Maybe the government of Guyana has communicated its solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan that I am unaware of. As well, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) and the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT) have not issued statements on the terrible tragedy unfolding in Pakistan.
Pakistan and Guyana share close cultural and civilizational ties. Pakistan attended Guyana’s independence celebration in 1966 and presented a handmade silk rug to the new nation. Cricket has also brought our two countries closer.
The flag of Pakistan is still use to decorate masjids, homes, gates and cars of a particular community in Guyana. Zindabad Pakistan! Our prayers are with the people of Pakistan.
Yours faithfully,
Ray Chickrie
