The ethical recruitment of migrant labour was one of the themes of a workshop hosted on Tuesday at the Marriott Hotel in George-town.
The workshop was convened by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United States Department of State and the Western Hemisphere Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour (MoL).
According to a MoL release, the workshop aim-ed at informing representatives of the Ministry of Labour, the Private Sector and the Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency (CRMA) on practices which will support in the ethical recruitment of labour, specifically migrant labour.
Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, in his remarks at the seminar said that recruitment must be free of prejudice or bias, to guarantee that all employees are treated fairly.
“Ethical recruitment, in my view, shouldn’t be the procedures by which you have to recruit the best candidate. It must go beyond that. It must be the protection of the rights of the workers… the safety of workers, the equal treatment of workers, and it must be, in my view, where people are not recognized based on country of origin or ethnic origin”, he said.
