National swimmer Leon Seaton set a new national record in the men’s freestyle event at the recent 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships.
Seaton, competing in Lima, Peru, placed first in clocking 53.48 seconds in the 100m men’s freestyle event breaking Andrew Fowler’s record of 54.10s in the process.
Seaton also clocked a personal best in the men’s 50m freestyle event with a time of 25.58 second which earned him fourth place.
“I’m very elated to do it. I’m very happy,” Seaton told Stabroek Sports last night of his achievement.
“The championships were great. Kudos to the organisers and to FINA for pulling off yet another great swim meet.”
“I’d also like to thank my local swimming association for giving me multiple opportunities to improve on my skill. I can guarantee that this isn’t the end. More is still yet to come look out for that,” he said.
“I’d like to thank my parents, my coaches, sponsors, my friends and family and everyone who have supported me from the beginning.
Seaton applauded his competitors who he said did well for their respective countries by showing great heart.
The championships, originally set for 24-29 August last year, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and ran from August 30th to September 4.
The Guyana team consisted of Seaton, Raekwon Noel, Ariel Rodrigues and coach, Christol Thom.
