A retired cop has been placed in police custody after he and two others allegedly robbed and abducted a Mahaica businessman after claiming that the man owed them a sum of money.
Reports revealed that the victim, 35-year-old Jagdesh Mangal of Belmont, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was at a popular bar located at Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown when he was assaulted, relieved of his belongings and forced into a motor vehicle on Monday at about 7 pm.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), enquiries have revealed that the victim and the suspects have an ongoing dispute over a sum of money.
The victim told the police that he was at the bar when two suspects, along with the retired cop showed up in a vehicle. He said the men then exited the car, approached him and two of the suspects started to punch him about his body, while telling him that they wanted their money.
Mangal said that he heard the retired policeman telling the two suspects to take him away which resulted in him being forced into the back seat of the suspects’ vehicle.
The Police said that the victim further reported that while in the vicinity of Vlissengen Road, one of the suspects pointed a gun at him, and relieved him of his gold and diamond band valued $1.5 Million, one ring valued $1.2M and one gold chain valued $900,000.
The victim then told Police that he was taken to the home of one of the suspects in Kitty, where he was forced to sign a note at gunpoint stating that he owed $900,000 to the suspects. He said that he was later taken to a hotel on Church Street where he was ordered out of the vehicle.
The statement said that Mangal later reported the matter to the Brickdam Police Station and an investigation was launched.
During the investigation, the detective who visited the bar questioned several persons, including the proprietor who related that she was in the kitchen area when she heard a commotion and upon checking, she saw the two suspects cuffing the victim and then placed him into a car and drove away. The woman further related that she called on the retired policeman to intervene, but he refused.
According to the police, the retired cop was arrested and is presently in custody at the Kitty Police Station assisting with investigation, while the two other suspects remain at large.
Footage from several CCTV cameras are yet to be reviewed as investigations continue said the police.
