As part of efforts to aid schools in their preparation for the 3rd edition of the GuyOil/Tradewind Tankers Secondary Schools Football League, tournament coordinators, the Petra Organization, donated four balls to each of the eight participating schools yesterday during the official team briefing.
The presentation took place at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, which will serve as the venue for the entire tournament.
Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of Petra Organization, once again affirmed the importance of the tournament, declaring that the league format is synonymous globally with the pursuit of football development at every level.
Mendonca explained that the tournament will utilise a one-round format, although the aim for future editions is for the event to incorporate a two-round design. He further stated that all matches will be 70 minutes in duration.
Meanwhile, Tradewind Tankers Communication and Promotion Officer Saskia McClintock stated that she is anticipating an exciting and competitive tournament. The tournament which is slated to commence on Sunday with four fixtures, will conclude on November 6, and features eight schools. The competing teams are: Dolphin, North Georgetown, President’s College, West Ruimveldt, Golden Grove, Christianburg/Wismar, Cummings Lodge, and Friendship.
In the opening match at 12.00 hours, North Ruimveldt opposes Cummings Lodge, while Christianburg/Wismar engages West Ruimveldt from 13.30 hours, and Golden Grove tackles Friendship at 15.00 hours. In the final match, Dolphin Secondary takes aim at President’s College from 16.30 hours.
The eventual winner of the tournament will receive $500,000 towards a school project and the championship trophy. The second, third, and fourth place finishers will pocket $300,000, $200,000, and $100,000 respectively towards an initiative. On the individual side, awards will also be presented for the most valuable player, highest goal scorer, and best goalkeeper. The top two finishers in the event will qualify for the Goodwill International Championship.
