A pedal cyclist died yesterday morning after colliding into a hire car along the Canje Public Road in Berbice.
The dead man has been identified as 52-year-old Lakeram Sarjoo, of Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the accident occurred at about 08:10 hrs and involved hire car HD 628, owned and driven by a 47-year-old male of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam Berbice.
According to a GPF statement, investigations revealed that the hire car was proceeding north along the western drive lane at a slow rate of speed, while Sarjoo was proceeding in the opposite direction at a fast rate of speed, swerving between vehicles.
The cyclist reportedly collided with the front of the hire car, which resulted in him falling to the road surface and receiving injuries about his body.
The GPF said Sarjoo was picked up by the hire car driver in a semi-conscious state and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who treated him for a fractured jaw and right leg.
He was later admitted in the Accident and Emergency Unit, where he subsequently died while receiving additional treatment.
Following his death, the hire car driver was arrested at the hospital and escorted to the Central Police Station, where a breathalyzer test was conducted and found that he had no alcohol in his system.
