With the focus of exposing chess to a wider audience, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will hold two informative chess sessions at the Giftland Mall on September 24 and October 1 from 2pm to 7pm.
The introductory sessions will be conducted by the GCF’s top senior and junior players. Senior officials will also be present to encourage persons to become members of the GCF. All are invited to support the venture.
Meanwhile, in international news, the teenaged Iranian/French chess superstar Alireza Firouzja conquered the ninth edition of the Sinquefield Cup, which was held in St Louis, Missouri, USA. He won the Rapid and Blitz sections of the Cup and grabbed an extra US$100,000 for winning the 2022 Grand Chess Tour.
Firouzja’s winnings for the Grand Chess Tour are as follows: US$172,250 + US$100,000 bonus.
Firouzja is one of five junior players rated 2700 or above and currently stands 50+ rating points above his nearest U-20 rival. At 2785, he is sure to fix his sights on the magical 2800 mark, which only three men have surpassed. Magnus Carlsen from Norway is FIDE rated at 2864, the highest worldwide, and he is followed by China’s Ding Liren at 2808. In the third position is Ian Nepomniachtchi at 2792. Fabiano Caruana had cracked the prestigious 2800 mark but recently his FIDE rating has dropped. Readers would recall Carlsen refused to compete against Nepomniachtchi following the outcome of the last Candidates tournament which Nepomniachtchi won. He noted he would have preferred Firouzja as a world championship contender, but Firouzja did not win the Candidates to qualify him as a contender. He said he had beaten Nepomniachtchi in the previous world championship match and he does not feel challenged.
