A Canada-based Guyanese was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of break and enter and larceny after a court heard that the police were afraid he would flee the country.
Kurt Savory, 56, whose address was given as Lot 367 Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, was hauled before the Georgetown court of Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, who read the charge to him. The man told the magistrate he had only made a joke about leaving the country.
The allegation against the construction worker states that between July 31 and August 5, 2022, at Mango Lane, East Ruimvedlt, while being in the company of others, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Handel Legall and stole a vacuum cleaner worth $85,000, a microwave worth $45,000, three cordless phones valued at $100,000, a stereo-set worth $65,000, a blender which cost $20,000, an electrical fan worth $10,000, an electrical iron worth $10,000, a quantity of food stuff which amounted to $48,000, a quantity of clothing valued at $168,000, a quantity of detergents valued at $24,000, a shaving set worth $18,000, a gas bottle worth $7,000 and two cases of beer bottles worth $4,000.
Savory pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison.
The prosecutor strongly objected to man being granted bail on the grounds that it was him who led them to the recovery of some of the stolen items, and that while he was initially released on his own recognisance with orders that he return to the East La Penitence Police Station, he never reported back to the station.
The prosecutor also noted that acting on information that Savory was planning to flee the country, ranks went to the home where he currently resides and arrested him. As a result, the prosecutor said it was feared that if he is to be released on bail, there is a high chance of him leaving the jurisdiction and never returning.
Meanwhile, after hearing that he was being remanded, a furious Savory yelled, “I will kill myself. Remand is not for me…I’m not built for Guyanese prison.” He further went on to beg the magistrate to lodge his passport so that he can be released on his own recognizance once more. He also told the court that he made a joke about leaving the country, which the police took literally.
The case against the man was then adjourned until September 26, 2022.
