Maurice Moore was more than an outstanding athlete

Dear Editor,

Mention was made recently in the press of Maurice Moore as an outstanding footballer, representative of British Guiana and the West Indies. But Maurice was also outstanding at cricket, hockey and table tennis in all of which he represented Queen’s College. He went on to play hockey at the national level and was also selected for captain of both the national football and table tennis teams. It was at table tennis that he later represented Canada.

A fully qualified accountant, Maurice Moore was a winning chess player and an accomplished pianist. Along with the late Aubrey Bishop, who qualified as the country’s first FIFA referee, Maurice and members of all Queen’s College teams at the time had to obtain no more than ten passes at the Oxford and Cambridge Universities Joint Board Examinations, to move on to the Advanced Level that averaged four subjects. Of course, like all the persons named he was a member of The Penumbrians, of whom the late Rashleigh Esmond Jackson was the first President.

Sincerely,

E.B. John
