A labourer has been sentenced to six months behind bars after he pleaded guilty to stealing 100 pounds of ginger from a Stabroek Market vendor yesterday.
Ramesh Persaud, 41, who has no fixed place of abode, appeared in the Georgetown court of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read a charge of simple larceny to him.
The charge against the labourer states that between September 17 and September 19, 2022, at Vendor’s Mall, Stabroek Market, he stole 100 pounds of ginger, valued at $80,000, which was the property of Chandanie Sueram.
Persaud, who refused to explain himself to the court, accepted the charge and was subsequently sentenced to six months in jail.
According to the prosecutor’s facts, Persaud would usually work for Sueram. As a result, between the dates mentioned, the woman gave Persaud her keys and left him in charge of her stall. However, upon her return on September 19, she noticed that a quantity of ginger was missing.
She then went to confront Persaud and when she asked about the ginger, the man refused to answer her. It was further stated that as the woman asked around, she was told by other vendors that it was Persaud who removed the ginger.
