Labourer gets six months’ jail over theft of 100lbs of ginger

A labourer has been sentenced to six months behind bars after he pleaded guilty to stealing 100 pounds of ginger from a Stabroek Market vendor yesterday.

Ramesh Persaud, 41, who has no fixed place of abode, appeared in the Georgetown court of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read a charge of simple larceny to him.

The charge against the labourer states that between September 17 and September 19, 2022, at Vendor’s Mall, Stabroek Market, he stole 100 pounds of ginger, valued at $80,000, which was the property of Chandanie Sueram.
