A Crabwood Creek couple and their two children saw their house go up in flames yesterday morning after a pressure cooker exploded on the stove top.
Hemchand Bacchus, 47, a labourer of Lot 101 Grant 1806 Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne, explained that he resided in the two storey wooden building with his wife and children, who are ages 11 and 7.
When contacted, Bacchus said that he was not at home when he received news that his house was on fire. The man, who was still shaken up over the ordeal, related that he rushed home as his wife, Nalinie Sarju, 47, and children had been left at home. When he arrived he found them on the roadways.
According to him, his wife’s back was scorched due to the fire.
Sarju told to her husband that she was in the kitchen cooking when the pressure pot, which was on the stove top, suddenly exploded. After the explosion, some nearby items caught on fire and the flames quickly spread throughout the fully furnished house, which is estimated to have been worth over $3 million.
Bacchus yesterday was in a state of despair as he noted that he is unsure where they will seek accommodation. The man stated that he worked hard throughout his adult life to build and furnish the house so that his family could reside comfortably, and that it was extremely difficult to witness all of their possessions go up in flames.
Bacchus can be contacted on telephone number 653-7440. He is pleading for assistance from the general public to rebuild. However, he stressed that he would be grateful for school supplies as well as he does not want his children’s education to be affected.
