Dear Editor,
A magician draws your attention and focus on one thing while all the hidden tricks and details are happening somewhere else. The PPP Government has skillfully led us to believe that the local content legislation is in the best interest of Guyana and ensures Guyanese companies benefit and the majority of the oil and gas profits remains here. But the great wizards are pumping that money into much needed construction, development and infrastructure.
Guyana is evolving before our eyes with rapid speed, all of which is much needed. However, who are getting these projects? Guyana has a robust amount of capacity and equipment in the construction industry, some of the top names include SourceOne and its affiliate companies, BK Construction, GuyAmerica and so on just to name a few. Yet still a Trinidadian duopoly exists where Junior Sammy literally rolled into Guyana and took the lion’s share of the government paving and construction projects.
Needless to say the other beneficiary is ARONCO who even rents equipment from Jr Sammy to execute jobs they won. In other words we are trying to protect the leakage of oil and gas revenue and ensure opportunities for Guyanese on one hand but then perfectly delivering these lump sums to Junior Sammy and Aronco? Are we ONE Guyana or ONCE Guyana?
Sincerely,
Bharrat Persaud
