The Management of the Guyana/Suriname Ferry Service yesterday announced that the M.V. Canawaima will return to operation today.
The statement comes two days after management had announced that the ferry was down due to engine failure.
While the initial statement had said that it was unclear when the ferry would return to operation, yesterday’s release confirmed that the ferry will depart Suriname tomorrow morning for Guyana as it returns to the schedule of one crossing per day.
Today September, 24, the vessel is scheduled to depart Suriname at 10:00hrs, (check-in: 07:30hrs to 09:00hrs) and Moleson Creek Terminal Guyana at 10:30hrs (Check-in: 06:30hrs-08:30hrs).
Management in their statement added that “although there is one scheduled crossing daily, we continue to operate as traffic warrants, and as such, multiple trips may be facilitated if deemed necessary.”
The ferry service is an important aspect of travel between Guyana and Suriname, as often when the ferry is down persons use unsafe routes and means to travel across the Corentyne River. Additionally, whenever the ferry is down the business community is also significantly affected as businesses are unable to move goods and services between the countries.
