A man is now dead after a truck collided with him and drove over his head along Mandela Avenue on Monday night.
The Guyana Police Force today identified the deceased as Hawatt Green, 45, who was riding an electric bike south along Mandela Avenue when he was hit.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 21:25 hrs, when both the truck, GZZ 850, driven by Trinidad national Fazal Mohammed, and Green were proceeding south along Mandela Avenue. Green was said to be in in the pedal cycle lane ahead of the truck.
The police said as the truck driver attempted to drive by Green, the left wheel of the vehicle collided with the cyclist, causing him to fall onto the road surface, and the wheel then drove over his head, crushing him.
The truck driver continued to proceed further south before eventually being stopped by another driver, who informed him that he had collided with Green. The driver of the truck was subsequently arrested by the police.
An emergency ambulance from the Central Fire Station was summoned with EMT personnel, who pronounced Green dead on the scene at 21:42 hrs. His body was formally identified by his relatives and was escorted to the Memorial Funeral Home where it is presently awaiting post mortem examination.
Notice of intended Prosecution was served on Mohammed. A breathalyser test conducted on him but found no trace of alcohol in his breath. He remained in police custody up to this morning.
