Bess arrives in Paraguay for S/A Games

Keavon Bess, the Chef de Mission of Team Guyana’s delegation to the X11 South American Games arrived in Asuncion, Paraguay on Tuesday ahead of yesterday’s all important  Delegation Registration Meeting (DRM) for the event which kicks off on Saturday.

According to Bess, the DRM which commenced at noon, encompassed all final arrangements for the local delegation.

“As part of the operations, the names of each person comprising Guyana’s delegation inclusive of the President and Assistant General Secretary was confirmed and certified. All sporting disciplines and events that Guyana’s athletes would be competing in was confirmed and certified.”

Bess who also served as Chef at the last Games in 2018 in Bolivia added “All of Guyana’s eligibility forms for its athletes and coaches were handed over to the ODESUR officials who conducted the DRM, so we are officially ready to go.

Along with the 16 sportsmen and women and Bess, the coaches and managers numbering six, will comprise Guyana’s 22-member outfit to quadrennial Games.

Team Guyana will compete in the following disciplines at the games: table tennis which will be represented by six persons; boxing (3); squash (4) and badminton (3).

The South American Games is a regional multi-sport event held between nations in South America. Formerly known as the Southern Cross Games, the event is organized by the South American Sports Organization (Organizacion Deportiva Sudamericana, ODESUR). The first official South American Games was held in La Paz, Bolivia in 1978. Since then, it has been held every four years.

Athletes from 15 countries will complete across 49 disciplines with many serving as qualifiers to the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. (Emmerson Campbell)
