After a two-year hiatus, Guyana’s premier natural hair event Curl Fete promises to be day filled with exciting activities.
The event begins at 10:00 hrs on Saturday at the Promenade Gardens and co-founder Tamika Henry-Fraser said patrons should get there from the start. She stated that there will be a packed day, with events from morning to all the way into the night.
Her vision for this year’s event was to make it even more inclusive by incorporating products for hygiene, beauty and body care.
“We started out with promoting natural hair textures… What we have realized through Curl Fete is that a lot of people have learned to be more not only about their hair but their skin and sense of fashion, lifestyle…We want Curl Fete to be a safe space for where persons can just express themselves, their beauty and be comfortable,” Henry-Fraser told Stabroek News.
The day’s events kick off with a jam session with music from Kunjaz Steele Ensemble and transitions into yoga on the lawns with Dat Yoga Chick at 10:30 hrs. At 11:00 hrs, there will be a discussion on self-image and mental health followed by a Hustle Hard segment, where young entrepreneurs would be given business tips and advice. After this they will embark on a job fair presentation by Itel and hosted by Feliz Robertson after which they will branch off into a panel discussion, titled ‘What is Neat and Tidy?’.
In the afternoon session they return with ‘Loc’ed and Loaded,’ a workshop specializing in care and styling of locs followed by a special segment for guys. “With beard comes great responsibility,” a workshop that touches on beard care and men’s wellness would be hosted by Chevy Devonish.
The day of activities continue with other workshops and segments such as Miss Match, Scars to your Beautiful, Feel the Beat, Tights Curls Culture and then the Big Chop. In this segment a lucky person will get the opportunity for a full make over from Glamour beauty under the Shea Moisture Product line. This is schedule for 15:20 hrs.
As the events move into the evening, patrons will be able to enjoy other activities such as a Zumba Dance Off, hair shows, live performances, salon competition and Curl Fete rewards.
Also scheduled for the day is the BIP app Scavenger Hunt, where patrons can win fantastic prizes.
This year Henry said they partnered with the Cricket Carnival Committee to have the event listed as one of the activities on the calendar to give visitors an opportunity to witness an event with a difference.
She said that while they had released the date before Cricket Carnival was announced, when they saw the opportunity to be a part of the calendar of events they jumped at it.
Tickets for the event can be picked up from Koko, Makeda, Pawsome Pets, Purple Clover (Giftland) – (Georgetown locations); New Level Barber, Shop n Salon, New Amsterdam – (Berbice locations); and Chicken Stag Bar, Mackenzie and Sister to Sister’s Beauty (Linden locations).
