The High Commission of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) in Georgetown yesterday marked the 153rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 118th birth anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
A release from the Indian High Commission said that the event was held at the Gandhi Statue in Promenade Gardens, Georgetown.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal and Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine attended along with members of the Diplomatic Corps and others.
High Commissioner of India, Dr. K.J. Srinivasa said that Gandhi is an international name and his principles and philosophy are well-known and practiced across the world.
The High Commissioner also paid rich tribute to India’s former Prime Minister Shastri. The release said that Shastri was an important figure during the freedom struggle and became Prime Minister in 1964 post Jawaharlal Nehru’s demise.
