Dear Editor,
Our Amerindian brothers and sisters in the diaspora of Canada get together for a heritage month celebration in Toronto recently. The celebration of a rich culture and tradition was organized by the son of Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai. Keito Sukhai in his welcoming remarks emphasized the need for the First People of Guyana to unite under the banner of the “one Guyana” and to advance the development our people.
He further highlighted some of the achievements of the various Amerindian communities across Guyana and stressed the need for more development of his people. Andrieko Basir delivered a speech on behalf of the Government and President, Irfaan Ali, and the various Amerindian communities across Guyana. A special Amerindian dance was performed by Judy Permansingh, Lyn Da Silva, Mona Basir, and Melisa Sukhai.
There were over fifty participants for the day’s activities; Amerindian delicacies were prepared, inclusive of pepper pot with cassava bread, roasted labba and wild hog along with the beverage fly. There are plans for a bigger and better organized heritage month celebration for September 2023.
Sincerely,
Andrieko Basir
