Guyana’s badminton players will kick off their medal hunt today at the ongoing X11 South American Games which is being hosted in Paraguay.
According to reports, Narayan Ramdhani, Akili Haynes and Priyana Ramdhani will all take the court this morning.
Starting from 09:00hrs, the three will contest the individual men and women’s singles round of 32 matches. At 13:05hrs the Ramdhani siblings will battle in the mixed doubles competition.
The quadrennial Games, which first took place in 1978, will see 15 countries, including 12 from South America and three from Central America, competing for honours in 53 different sports.
Guyana’s 16 athletes are set to compete in four; badminton, boxing, squash and table tennis.
Boxing punches off on Saturday day and concludes on October 13 while the table tennis and squash players will spring into action from October 9 and 10 respectively.
Some 5,000 athletes from 15 countries and more than 1,800 officials who are joined by 4,500 volunteers and some 10,000 spectators are expected to visit Paraguay over the coming weeks.
In total, nearly 20,000 people will gather for 15 days in Asunción and the surrounding areas of Encarnación, Carmen del Paraná and East City.
Along with the 16 athletes, Guyana’s contingent comprises six officials inclusive of Chef de Mission, Keavon Bess.
