Police in Berbice registered a major breakthrough over the weekend after they arrested a logger with narcotics on Angoy’s Avenue who was wanted for the 2010 murder of Cleveland Hetemeyer.
Hetemeyer of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was shot and killed during an armed robbery about 90 miles up the Canje River, Berbice on November 4, 2010.
Police had said that Hetemeyer along with three other workers were approached by two armed suspects who demanded their boat and engine. Hetemeyer refused and was shot, while the others ran away, the police had said. The perpetrators then escaped with the boat and engine.
In 2011, Rickford La Fleur, who was nabbed at a Suriname backtrack route also with a quantity of drugs, was charged and remanded to prison for Hetemeyer’s murder. Based on information gathered, presently a preliminary inquiry is ongoing at the magistrate’s court in relation to that matter. Yesterday, Orin Osmond Bristol also known as ‘Esmond La Fleur’ or ‘Orin Adams, 33, a logger of Smithfield, New Amsterdam, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh where he was charged with Hetemeyer’s murder which occurred on 2010 -11- 04 at Silverballi, Gutter Creek, Canje River, Berbice.
Bristol, who was represented by attorney at law, Mursaline Bacchus, was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison.
Bristol was also charged with the possession of 18.5 grammes of cannabis on Saturday, October 1 at Angoy’s Avenue for the purpose of trafficking.
The man pleaded not guilty to that charge and was placed on $40,000 bail.
He will return to court on October 21 for reports on both matters.
