GUYOIL service stations are continuing to see heavy traffic as motorists take advantage of the company’s fuel prices that were lowered in accordance with a Ministry of Finance announcement on Saturday night.
The lowered fuel prices at various branches such as Providence, East Bank Demerara; Sheriff Street, and Regent Street, in Georgetown, continue to attract long queues of motorists, especially the public transportation vehicles such as mini-buses and taxis.
GUYOIL’s Communication and Promotion Officer, Saskia McClintock told Stabroek News yesterday that there has been a traffic buildup at its stations since the prices were lowered on Sunday. She disclosed that so far, they have seen increased sales from the reduced prices and that GUYOIL is getting ‘the rush’ from commuters, especially in the public transportation sector; referencing the queue at the Providence gas station. She also said that commuters seem happy although some have stated that they would like prices to be reduced a little more to how it was before the tariffs rose dramatically.
GUYOIL’s prices are as follows: Super 95 gasoline (95 octane) – $215 per litre; regular diesel – $225 per litre; and ultra-low sulphur diesel – $260 per litre.
Stabroek News visited the Regent Street and Sheriff Street branches where long lines of commuters could be seen waiting to purchase fuel for their vehicles.
One driver, Mark Ramsaroop expressed the hope that it will force other gas station to drop their prices as well as that was what was needed. He said he was surprised that the government did lower the fuel price because it had dropped in the world market two months ago and nothing was done. Also, he opined that it should drop a little bit more to further assist Guyanese.
Another driver at the Sheriff Street gas station said that “the fuel price is not so expensive than before and it’s kinda like in my budget.”
Jamal Hussain said “It’s a good decision they mek and it will be easier for the drivers of taxis and minibuses, it’s a good thing,” adding that he hopes it would be a little better next year.
Rubis station supervisor, Sarah Persaud, at the Vlissengen Road branch told Stabroek News during a visit there that a reduction of fuel prices is being considered, but the aim is to first use up the current fuel stocks.
Rubis’ current fuel prices are as follows: Pure 95 (Unleaded) – $279 per litre, and diesel – $279 per litre.
Meanwhile a source close to the Sol gas station in Regent Street told Stabroek News, “The fuel price have not changed at this point and they can’t comment on any future change at this present time.”
Sol’s current prices are: Fuel Save (with octane booster) – $279 per litre, and $1,268 per gallon; V-power – $286 per litre, and $1,300 per gallon; and diesel – $279 per litre, and $1,268 per gallon.
