The Petra Organization donated the championship trophy towards the maiden edition of the Joshua Denny Memorial U20 Football Championship, which is set to conclude on Friday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
The presentation occurred yesterday at the Girls Guide Pavilion, Brickdam. Tournament organizer, and mother of the late footballer Aferya Denny, received the trophy from Petra Organization member Nareeza Latif.
Denny, during brief remarks, said that the tournament has been well supported by the teams and that the initiative will be an annual event which is mothers against gun violence.
She added that the event will continue to be staged in September which is the month of Joshua Denny’s birth and unfortunate his untimely death.
Santos will oppose Georgetown Football Club in the finale, following semi-final wins over Camptown and Fruta Conquerors respectively.
“Joshua Denny, who represented the Lodge School team at the Milo and KFC tournament, and also Camptown FC from U-11 to the senior ranks, was robbed and brutally murdered on the 30th of September 2021 whilst on his way to work.
It is against this backdrop that my family and I wish to host this tournament to sensitize the public and moreso the youths, about working to achieve their goals instead of crime,” an official release stated.
