With the ninth edition of the Courts Pee Wee Boys U11 Football Championship scheduled to start Saturday, tournament coordinators, the Petra Organization, donated two balls to each of the competing schools to aid in their respective preparation.
This simple but significant presentation, which was staged in conjunction with the presentation of the tournament rules, occurred yesterday at the Girls Guide Pavilion, Brickdam.
Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca stated that the tournament provides a platform for the competitors to build cohesion and camaraderie, adding that it also affords the opportunity for emerging players to develop their talents. Meanwhile, Marketing Manager of Courts Guyana, Christel Van Sluytman, disclosed that activities of this nature will always be supported by the establishment as it brings value to the communities, which is part of the entity’s mantra in ‘Bringing Value Home’.
The event will conclude on November 19th. All matches will be held at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
The teams will be divided into six groups of four. The top two finishers from each section and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the elimination round. The respective losers in the knockout section will progress to the plate division to battle for positions 5-16.
Although the list of schools are yet to be finalized, the possible competing teams are: Sophia, Redeemer, F.E. Pollard, J.E. Burnham, Maes, North Georgetown, St. Margaret’s, St. Agnes, St. Angela, Marian Academy, School of the Nations, Winfer Garden, St. Pius, West Ruimveldt, Tucville, Enterprise, St. Ambrose, St. Stephen’s, Smith Memorial, Den Amstel, South Ruimveldt, West Minster, Genesis, Timehri, Soesdyke, Grahams Hall, Ann’s Grove, Victoria, Beterverwagting, and Mocha.
Winner of the tournament will receive the championship trophy, gold medals, and a pair of uniforms. Each player will also be presented with an electronic tablet. On the other hand, the runners-up will collect a trophy, silver medals and six balls. Meanwhile, the third place finisher will pocket a trophy, and four balls while the fourth place side will walk away with a trophy.
On the individual side, a trophy and a pair of football cleats will be presented to the eventual Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer, and Best Goalkeeper.
