Stafrei Alexander and Owen Belfield were on Wednesday handed a life sentence and a 14-year sentence respectively for the 2015 murder of Linden resident, Richard Remmington, whose decomposing remains had been found in a clump of bushes.
The duo was unanimously convicted by a jury back in April, but their sentencing had been deferred for the preparation of probation and other social impact reports.
They had been found guilty as charged, of murdering Remmington between February 9th and 12th of 2015.
At the sentencing hearing, Justice Brassington Reynolds who presided over the trial, imposed a life sentence on Alexander, ordering that he is not to be considered eligible for parole until he would have served 25 years.
Meanwhile, to the 14 years he imposed on Belfield, the Judge ordered that deductions be made by the prisons, for the time the offender would have spent on remand awaiting trial.
Remmington’s remains were discovered along a track in the vicinity of Matthews Lane in the Cholmondeley Hill area on February 12th, 2015.
He had reportedly been shot three times, including once to the head.
Following police investigations, the duo was arrested and charged.
Both men were represented by defence attorney Adrian Thompson, while the State’s case was presented by prosecutor Seeta Bishundial.
The trial was heard at the High Court in Demerara.
