The Sol and Rubis gas stations have lowered their fuel prices after state-owned GUYOIL slashed its tariffs on Sunday following a decision by the government.
Rubis Supervisor, Sarah Persaud told Stabroek News during a visit to the Vlissengen Road gas station yesterday that they dropped the price of gasoline on Wednesday and today the diesel price will be going down also. She expressed the hope that when people see the reduction they will come in to purchase fuel because when the price was high, sales were very slow. She also acknowledged that the demand for gasoline on Wednesday afternoon was much greater than the day before.
Rubis’s Pure 95 (Unleaded) gasoline is now selling at $217 per litre. The diesel price is however still at $279 per litre.
During a visit to the Sol Regent Street gas station, the prices were observed to be as follows: FuelSave (with octane booster) – $219 per litre; V- Power- $225 per litre, and diesel $227 per litre.
With Sol and Rubis lowering their prices, the congestion seen at GUYOIL stations since Sunday has eased.
One driver at the Sol Gas station said, “For me as a person that transport foreigners occasionally, it is good because I have to drive every day and I come now and a $2,000 dollar in fuel, at least I’m going to get an extra day driving more than my normal day. So it’s good fah me, it’s beneficial, I could work with it.”
Another driver, Anthony Haley at the Sol gas station commented, “The lowering of fuel prices helped me to save a whole lot more, because you can give the kids more money to go to school since the gas price was a lot more before. So as it dropped, everything is good now.”
David Williams, a Rubis gasoline customer noted, “Most definitely it is something I have appreciated that the government did, and it benefits everyone. Generally, as long as the prices of gas drops, it benefits everyone, whether indirectly or directly because you get more disposable income in your pockets. And, you will be spending less on gas, so you will have more money to spend on other items like foodstuff.”
And another Rubis driver, Kenard Ramnaraine remarked, “I get more gas in my tank, I was going to GUYOIL but the $2 (less) is not nothing much, so I didn’t had to travel till to GUYOIL. I was able to save since the money can go to something else like buying KFC.”
Enoch Craig, a driver, said, “I’m getting to drive around in my A/C more. Before I had to skimp because the gas would finish faster, and I definitely need it in this sun. Also, same amount, $2,000 that I usually buy, I’m still buying and I’m getting more gas for my money, by this weekend I should full my tank.”
Meanwhile, Calvin McCammon, a bus driver filling up at the GUYOIL gas station said, ”Well the gas price is good as it dropped to $215, I mean if you had got it for $195, it would have been much better. As a bus driver the road don’t pick up sometimes, sometimes you go home with nothing. Well the $215 helped a little bit but if it could drop a little more like $195, we gon be better. We will go home with a little bit more.”
GUYOIL’s prices are as follows: Super 95 gasoline (95 octane) – $215 per litre; regular diesel – $225 per litre; and ultra-low sulphur diesel – $260 per litre.
On Saturday, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, announced on behalf of the Government a cut of gasoline and diesel prices at the pump to be charged by the Guyana Oil Company Ltd.
