Teen remanded over Canal No. 1 murder

A 17-year-old boy was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of 29-year-old Deonarine Ramachandran during a scuffle last Saturday night.

The accused who resides at Conservancy Dam, Canal No. 1, West Bank Demerara (WBD) appeared virtually before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the capital offence. The matter was adjourned to October 27.

Ramachandran was stabbed in his abdomen during a scuffle with the teenager and his father. The teenager’s father was also arrested. However, he was released without being charged.

The murder occurred at around 10.30 pm.

Police in a statement said Ramachandran and the 17-year-old suspect were consuming alcohol at the home of the former.

During the course of the drinking spree, the police said investigations revealed that the suspect became intoxicated and began to behave in a disorderly manner. At this time, he was armed with a knife.

The police added that Ramachandran intervened, took away the knife and dealt the accused several slaps in an effort to “calm him down.”

Ramachandran’s approach however angered the suspect, resulting in the suspect leaving Ramachandran’s premises in a furious manner and making threats and using expletives.

Minutes later, the suspect returned with a cutlass to Ramachandran’s home. Upon seeing this, the police said Ramachandran also armed himself with a cutlass, approached the teenager and attempted to chop him but failed.

The 17-year-old suspect then ran away on the Conservancy Dam where he continued to issue expletives and threats directed towards Ramachandran.

Annoyed by the suspect’s behaviour, Ramachandran confronted the suspect. During the confrontation, the teenager ran away and went home.

Subsequently the suspect’s 58-year-old father got involved and a scuffle then ensued between him and Ramachandran.  It was in the midst of this scuffle that the 17-year-old suspect armed himself with a knife and dealt Ramachandran a stab in his abdomen.

Ramachandran was picked up by relatives and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died whilst receiving treatment.
