Three of Guyana’s elite boxers arrived in Asunción, Paraguay, yesterday on a mission to punch their way to the podium at the ongoing South American Games.

Following the technical meeting where the draws will be conducted today, competition for the fistic sport starts tomorrow from 19:00hrs.

The three prized fighters, Keevin Allicock, Colin Lewis, and Desmond Amsterdam, will have redemption on their minds after failing to land among the medals during the Commonwealth Games in England two months ago.

Allicock (featherweight) and Amsterdam (middleweight) bowed out in the quarterfinals while Lewis (light welterweight) lost his opening bout.

They will be looking to go much further in Paraguay.

According to Terrence Poole, one of two officials on the sojourn along with Gregory Cort, his charges have the ability to climb the podium steps.

“They have a lot of experience fighting at this level and I think they have the ability to win medals at these Games” said Poole yesterday.

Earlier this year, Amsterdam snared a bronze medal at the AMBC Elite Championships in Ecuador. It is a high probability that he along with Allicock and Lewis can return home with hardware from Paraguay. Stabroek Sport will keep readers updated as events in Paraguay unfold.
