A Lethem couple was granted bail after they were busted by ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) with 8,045.4 grams of marijuana and 1314.8 grams of cocaine in the trunk of the vehicle that they were in.
Thirty-five -year-old Duane Johnson and 23-year-old Nadine Jeffrey, both of Tabatinga, Lethem in Central Rupununi appeared yesterday before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court where they pleaded not guilty to the two charges.
They were each placed on $300,000 bail and the matters were adjourned until October 26th.
According to a Police statement, at about 00:12 hrs on Thursday, ranks who were on mobile patrol in Lethem, acted on information received and intercepted a red Nissan Duke which bore registration number PAB 3824 at Tabatinga and which was being driven by Johnson at the time. Jeffrey was also a passenger along with a nine-month-old baby boy.
A search was conducted on the vehicle and 13 bulky parcels wrapped in plastic were found in a black haversack in the trunk of the motorcar. In the presence of both Johnson and Jeffrey, the 13 parcels were opened. Eleven of them contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, while the other two parcels contained a quantity of rock-like substances suspected to be cocaine.
The police said that Johnson was told of the offence committed and cautioned after which he admitted ownership of the said narcotics. He was then arrested and escorted to the Lethem Police Station along with the narcotics.
The cannabis was weighed and amounted to 8,045.4 grams, while the cocaine amounted to 13.14.8 grams.
