Dear Editor,
As I wipe my 8yr old son’s tears today I vowed to never be in support of another school sports, hereafter. All my child wanted to do was run but he would have been a first time runner and the teacher in charge wasn’t sure he would “mek we win”, so she denied his only request to participate in the school races.
I trailed behind the people in charge all morning because I thought to myself, they must have a heart but my numerous pleas to include him in something, fell on deaf ears. I even asked if he could at least take part in the lime and spoon race and was denied yet again. What is the point of the school sports if it would leave the kids feeling so left out? Have the scoring of these races really corrupted the main point of the school’s sports?
As a parent my heart broke for my son and I was not the only dissatisfied parent. My son was so excited about the sports, I expensed myself with not just the sports donations and tickets but also searching all through Georgetown for their sports attire. I ended up all the way up Giftland Mall and, though it was even more costly, I was glad to get him in his sportswear.
Oh, but I didn’t know I had to buy long socks as well, so guess what, my son wasn’t even allowed to take part in the march because of this. Then to top it off they were denied meals because they were not athletes. I now see why a lot of children are absent on sports day. All the fun that used to be, has been taken out of our school sports and it is now a big competition for the teachers rather than a joyous experience for the children.
Sincerely,
J. Smith
