A Rose Hall, Corentyne man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with attempted murder.

Mark Anderson, 26, a cane harvester of Lot 30, Two Sisters Street, Rose Hall Town yesterday appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh where the charge of attempted murder was read to him.

He is accused of chopping Lawrence Rodrigues, 56, a labourer of Rose Hall Town on Friday last.

Anderson was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison. He will return to court on November 7th.

Stabroek News had  reported that on Friday last, Rodrigues uplifted his bicycle from the suspect after he had failed to return it after several days. After Rodrigues removed the bicycle from in front of the suspect’s premises, an argument ensued during which the suspect armed himself with a cutlass and attacked Rodrigues.

The man then chased Rodrigues with the cutlass on the roadway in Rose Hall Town until he finally caught up with him and began dealing him chops about his body.

Based on a video made by eyewitnesses, Rodrigues had fallen off of the bicycle on the road when the man began dealing the chops. The victim also attempted to shield himself with the bicycle.

Rodrigues was eventually taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he is hospitalized.
