Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony yesterday received a donation of sports equipment, games and personal hygiene supplies in an effort to expand the school health clubs in Regions One (Barima-Waini) and Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) along with services offered at Health Centres.
A release from the Ministry of Health said that the donations were presented by Nicolas Pron, UNICEF Representative, Guyana and Suriname and Mark Berman, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana.
Anthony expressed appreciation to the organisations for their continued support towards the Ministry of Health. He said that the supplies will help to encourage and reinforce health clubs within schools across Guyana, where students will be able to interact with each other on health related aspects that are taught in classrooms.
He said the Ministry will be launching a School Screening Programme, which will see students being checked at critical points in their school year, for dental health care, eye care, hearing loss and other issues.
Pron said that the donations will benefit over 10,000 adolescents across Guyana, while promoting a healthy learning environment.
Berman said that the collaborative project seeks to promote a safe and healthy learning environment and lifestyle among young girls and women. It also seeks to have the secondary school dormitory gain access to gender response programmes for healthy lifestyles to reduce gender based violence and to ensure that the dorms are safe and healthy.
