Guyana’s table tennis players bowed of of contention for singles honours at the South American Games currently underway in Paraguay yesterday.
Olympian Chelsea Edghill, the last remaining hope for singles glory, was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles competition yesterday afternoon by Colombia’s Cory Mejia 6-11, 6-11, 6-11 and 2-11.
She had reached the quarterfinals after dismissing the challenge of Peru’s Isabel Duffoo in a round of 16 clash 12-10, 11-9, 11-8, 6-11 and 11-7.
On Sunday, Edghill who drew a bye in the first round, defeated Paraguay’s Valeria Zalada 11-6, 11-1, 11-5 and 11-5.
Edghill’s teammates Priscilla Greaves and Natalie Cummings were also eliminated from the singles competition.
Greaves, after drawing a bye in the first round lost to Camilla Arguelles 4-11, 3-11, 6-11 and 6-11 while Cummings who also gained a first round bye defeated Maria Maldonado Peru 13-11, 11-2, 11-5 and 11-6 but lost to Daniela Gomez of Chile 5-11,7-11,3-11 and 6-11 in the round of 16.
In the men’s singles competition Elishaba Johnson lost 3-4 to Neycer Gavilanez of Ecuador 3-11, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6 and 5-11.
Christopher Franklin also lost to Brazil’s Rafael Turrini 6-11, 4-11, 7-11 and 6-11 while Shemar Britton defeated David Leon of Paraguay, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 and 11-9 but lost to Ecuador’s Alberto Mino yesterday 2-11, 6-11, 6-11 and 3-11.
In the men’s doubles the pair of Britton and Franklin defeated Fernando Monterrey and Jose Ortiz of Bolivia 11-5, 7-11, 11-2 and 11-7 before losing to Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre and Dario Toranzos 1-11, 8-11, 12-10 and 3-11.
In the women’s doubles the Edghill/Cummings pair lost to Argentina’s Camilla Arguelles and Candela Molero 6-11, 4-11 and 7-11.
In the mixed doubles competition Britton and Edghill whipped Bolivia’s Diego Avila and Andrea Terrazas 11-6, 11-5 and 11-7 but lost to Paraguay’s Aguirre and Lucero Ovelar 11-7, 11-13, 6-11 and 6-11.
The men’s team event starts today with Guyana playing Argentina and Ecuador while the women’s team will play Chile today and Ecuador tomorrow.
