A total of 266 pupils from Grades 1 and 2 at C V Nunes Primary in Region Two had to be sent home this morning after their classrooms were flooded.
According to the head teacher, Cheryl Peters Moore whenever it rains the classrooms situated at the bottom flat of the school would be flooded.
The head teacher said that it is a situation that has been affecting the school for over 20 years
She further said that whenever it rains the corridors of the school usually accumulate water and it would flow into the classrooms. She said because there is poor drainage in the school’s compound the water cannot get to drain properly and cleaners and staff members have to “bail” the water out.
When this newspaper visited the school, parents were entering to collect their children. Workers from the Regional Administration were also busy disinfecting and cleaning the classrooms. Teachers had to help to ensure that teaching aids were moved.
C V Nunes Primary is one of the leading schools on the Essequibo Coast with a population of 792 pupils.
