ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – A West Indies Academy team and Combined Campuses and Colleges will contest this year’s Regional Super50 Cup, as part of eight teams set to do battle in the Cricket West Indies limited overs championship bowling off later this month.
Neither side featured in last year’s tournament won by Trinidad and Tobago Red Force but will now be part of an expanded competition which runs from October 29 to November 19 across four venues in two countries.
Zone A, which comprises CCC, Windward Islands Volcanoes, Guyana Harpy Eagles and Red Force, will be played at Queen’s Park Oval and Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad while Zone B, comprising West Indies Academy, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions will be contested at Coolidge Cricket Ground and Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua.
For the West Indies Academy, the outing will be their first ever in the region’s premier limited overs championship and is a move by CWI to bridge “the gap between youth and professional cricket in the region.”
“The 2022 CG United Super50 Cup promises to be an action-packed event for our fans to feast on exciting cricket rivalries and for players to push for selection to the West Indies,” said CWI chief executive Johnny Grave.
“This year’s tournament features some of the region’s best and upcoming talent competing to win the CG United Sir Clive Lloyd Trophy.”
He added: “We are looking forward to seeing the West Indies Academy and CCC play against our professional regional teams and expect the competition to provide them with an excellent development opportunity.
“This will help to broaden the pool of players being exposed to the highest levels of competition at the regional level.”
Hurricanes and West Indies Academy will raise the curtain on the tournament with their clash at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground – one of 10 Zone B matches which will be broadcast live on ESPN Caribbean.
Meanwhile, every Zone A match will be streamed live on CWI’s YouTube channel.
The semi-finals will be played on November 16 and 17 at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, with the final scheduled for two days later at the same venue.
