Bad light stopped play in the second-round clash in the Guyana Cricket Board Senior Inter-County 50-over tournament resulting in Berbice beating Essequibo by 26 runs via Duckworth Lewis and Stern Method yesterday.
Essequibo won the toss and opted to bat first at Georgetown Cricket Club and posted 226 before being bowled out in 49 overs. Berbice reached 144 for four in 26 overs before bad light stopped play.
Essequibo’s innings was off to a rough start at 27-4 but Eknauth Persaud and Keemo Paul added 55 for the fifth wicket to bring their side to 82 before Persaud was trapped leg before wicket to Veerasammy Permaul for 18.
Paul went on to make 45 from 78 balls before he was also removed by Permaul. However, Quinten Sampson ensured Essequibo a solid total, hitting eight sixes and two fours during a destructive 65-ball 85. He added 96 for the seventh wicket with his captain, Antony Adams who played the supporting role with 30 from 60 balls. Extras also contributed significantly with 32. Romario Shepherd was the principal wicket taker with
4-37 while Kevin Sinclair took 3-35 and Permaul, 2-37. Anthony Bramble followed up his first-round century with 62 from 53 balls to set Berbice in line of victory. The right hander struck three sixes and seven fours while sharing in a 64-run partnership for the first wicket with Rampertab Ramnauth (12).
Cameos also came from Shepherd, who made 30 not out from 19, Jonathan Foo (16) and Sinclair (10). Garfield Philips took 2-16.
