The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is now handling the investigation involving an Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD) businessman who was allegedly found in possession of a quantity of uncustomed goods after breaching a roadblock earlier this month.
Police Commander of Region 4C, Khali Pareshram on Wednesday confirmed that the investigation was handed over to GRA. It is unclear whether the businessman has faced any charge to date.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) had said a party of ranks attached to the Mahaica Police Station were conducting a roadblock in the vicinity of Unity Junction, ECD on October 5 during which vehicles were stopped and searched.
The police said the businessman, who was driving motor van, bearing registration number GLL 987 breached the roadblock and sped away.
As a result, ranks pursued the motor van which was intercepted at Logwood, Enmore.
A search was conducted in the vehicle during which a quantity of uncustomed goods were found in black plastic bags.
The items which were seized included 660 packs of Zenden brand mosquito coil, 3 boxes of Atlanta cigarettes containing 150 cartons and two boxes of Red Oris cigarettes containing 100 cartons.
The police said the businessman produced a valid driver’s licence for a motorcar and not a motor van.
All the other documents for the motor van were also produced. However, they had all expired, the police added.
The businessman and the van of uncustomed goods were escorted to the Enmore Police Station where the items were lodged.
He was placed in police custody and the GRA was informed, the police had said.
