The traffic lights on Vlissengen Road between Church Street and North Road have been inoperable for quite some time, and this has resulted in the daily disruption of traffic at peak hours. These signals are only one of several sets around the city that are defunct and in some cases, for more than a year.
Stabroek News visited the area and observed the chaos at this junction. The Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force was contacted and they informed that they are only tasked with monitoring the lights, while the Ministry of Public Works is responsible for the maintenance of the lights.
When the Ministry of Public Works’ Media Department was contacted, the spokeswoman said that the Engineer did confirm that the ministry is responsible for the maintenance of traffic lights. She added that additional information as it relates to the outcome of the lights or whether the issue would be resolved, would be communicated as soon as the engineer delivers that information.
