Dear Editor,
The performance of our cricketers is getting from bad to worse. It is humiliating that the one time unbeatable team was knocked out of the World Cup tournament just after two games. This miserable performance has prompted many fans and Caribbean nationals the world over to ask, what is wrong with our cricket and what can be done to bring back the West Indies to the team it was or to a level of respectability.
We have to closely look at the structure and work out ways and means how we can attract young players from school level. It is important that we groom our youths, teach them the importance of discipline and fitness. It is clear that the present crop of players are not responding to the coaching team. We need to know why, since there might be need to change the coaches if they are not respected. We need to have coaches who can demand the respect and confidence of the players.
On the other hand, our players have to concentrate more… some of them appear to have a mental block when they are in a tight spot. This is baffling since they have all the training facilities their predecessors like Sobers, Hall, Kanhai et al did not enjoy. Discipline and fitness are key and our cricketers have to pay more emphasis in these two areas. Team work is also important.
Sincerely,
Oscar Ramjeet
