A source within the Health Services in Region Six informed Stabroek News yesterday that the driver of the ambulance found with chicken earlier this month in the Upper Corentyne Area has been fired.
Following the discovery of the chicken, Regional Health Officer, Dr. Vishalya Sharma said that an internal investigation was launched. However, the source yesterday said that while the driver was fired by the health department, no charges have yet been filed in the matter by any law agency.
According to the source, the sacked driver was slated to have a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday for reasons unknown. The source noted that during the internal investigation the driver was asked to provide a statement but failed to do so.
Matters such as these are often investigated by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), and while it was reported in certain sections of the press that it had made the bust, that agency has not released any information on the matter.
Police Commander of Region Six, Senior Superintendent, Shivpersaud Bacchus, when contacted after the discovery would only say that a report was made and that the police are investigating.
When asked then if any arrest was made by the police in the matter, Bacchus replied in the negative.
When contacted again yesterday, Bacchus said, “Investigations ongoing, police are investigating.”
The ambulance, PAC 4274, was busted at the back of Number 78 Rampoor Village, Corentyne.
Based on the initial information gathered, the driver of the ambulance was held by the investigators who made the discovery, while a guard at the institution was also being questioned.
A source had noted that the driver claimed to have uplifted the ambulance keys from the guard at the institution. Furthermore, this newspaper was informed that the driver of the vehicle would usually have to sign before uplifting the keys but did not do so in this instance.
