Amelia’s Ward Panthers and Eagles United recorded hard-fought wins in the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) Senior Men’s League and Namilco U17 championship respectively on Monday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden.
In the Namilco U17 section, Amelia’s Ward edged Milerock 1-0. The only noteworthy moment of the first half occurred in the 36th minute when Leancy Decker of Milerock was issued with a red card.
However, Tyrel Stephens proved to be the difference on the night, as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 48th minute following a scoreless first half period. It was a fortuitous conversion as a free-kick from 40 yards out inexplicably wrong-footed the goalkeeper and rolled into the back of the net. Meanwhile, Eagles clawed past Coomacka by the identical score. Omar Brewley secured the unlikely result following a conversion in the dying moments. It was a moment of individual brilliance, as Brewley uncorked a free-kick into the back of the net from outside the penalty box.
Also, Net-rockers and Botofago battled to a scoreless affair in the second U17 Namilco championship encounter.
The senior league continues today at the same venue with a doubleheader. At 18:00hrs, Milerock will lock horns with Amelia’s Ward Panthers, while the feature contest will pit Capital FC against Blueberry Hill at 20:00hrs.
