Fire Prevention Officer Sheldon Sauns has said that the fire that destroyed the China Star Store in Lethem, Region Nine on September 3rd was maliciously set.
The huge fire that gutted the building left two persons homeless and ten persons jobless. The scene was visited and assessed by Mayor of Lethem John Macedo, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn and Gregory Wickham, the Chief Fire Officer.
Macedo has said that the store was being rented by two Chinese nationals – Wuumo Cheng and Wuujian Giun.
The exact time the fire started is unclear but firefighters detected the blaze sometime after 8 pm and immediately rushed to the scene at 8:15 pm, according to a release by the Guyana Fire Service.
The store was a wooden and concrete building of two floors.
