The body of a 14 year-old student of the Linden Foun-dation Secondary School who was feared drowned in Kara Kara Creek, was discovered floating on Monday around 9:30am.
Bena Greaves, grandmother of the dead teen, Kenneitha Greaves, and who lives at 24 Old Kara Kara, McKenzie, Linden, told Stabroek News that she was on her way to visit other relatives in Wismar when she heard what happened. She had sent her granddaughter Kenneitha to take a kitten down the road to one of the children who had wanted one. However, when she arrived at the child’s home, she was told that the kitten was no longer wanted and it was suggested she take it back. However, instead of returning home, she opted to go to the creek which she accessed through the yard of the home and ventured into the deep where she started to go down.
A younger boy who saw what was happening, tried to save her. Unfortunately however, he had to let her go as she held on to him and was pulling him down as well. The grandmother also said that there were some older boys in the creek at the time who could have saved her but they “froze” and did nothing
Bena noted that the body was found between 9:30 to10:00 on Monday morning at the same spot where she drowned. She disclosed that her niece would normally go to the yard and play with her friends, since the yard normally has a lot of children playing inside. Kenneitha, she said, would sometimes bathe at the edge of the creek.
According to the grandmother, her granddaughter didn’t know which part of the creek was deep, as the other boys did. She mentioned that Devika, who lives in the yard, asked her granddaughter just before the incident took place, “Where is your grandmother? You could swim?” To which Kenneitha replied, that she couldn’t. Devika then told her to “Please go home.” As Devika turned her back to do something, she heard shouts for help and upon looking outside, saw that Kenneitha was struggling in the water. Knowing that she could not swim, Devika called the big boys to the rescue, but sadly they were unable to and Kenneitha went down in the water.
