As the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) gears up to run off the upcoming local government elections, it is reminding the various parties and other contestants of the need to have their symbols approved.
In an advertisement in today’s Sunday Stabroek, GECOM is instructing “all Political Parties, Voluntary Groups, and Individuals who are desirous of contesting the upcoming Local Government Elections… to submit to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), a symbol for approval no later than the 21st day before Nomination Day.
GECOM has designated 12 December, 2022 as Nomination Day
The advertisement explained that the applications for symbols, which must include printed and electronic versions (on a flash drive) of the respective symbols, must be submitted in sealed envelopes, clearly marked “Application for Symbol – Local Government Elections – 2023”, no later than 21st November to:
Chairman
Guyana Elections Commission
41 High and Cowan Streets
Kingston, Georgetown
It was also pointed out that applications can be submitted via e-mail at lo@gecom.org.gy and that Political Parties, Voluntary Groups, and Individuals in outlying Local Authority Areas (LAAs) may submit their symbol to the Registration Officer at the GECOM Registration Office in their area.
And according to GECOM, “A list of candidates submitted by any Political Party, Voluntary Groups, or Individual candidate on Nomination Day must be accompanied by the pre-approved symbol, as this is required for the publication of the list in accordance with Section 51 of the Local Authorities (Elections) Act, without which the Political Party, Voluntary Group, or Individual candidate would be unable to contest the Local Government Elections.”
Anyone needing further information may contact GECOM on 225-0277-9, 226-6557 and 223-9650
