Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony on Monday commissioned a new $24m water ambulance at Supenaam.
Dr. Anthony said the boat will be used to transport those patients who cannot be air-dashed to Parika and promised that all emergency cases will be dealt with in a more efficient manner.
Dr. Anthony said the new water ambulance, which is equipped with a 250 HP engine, will be used to service Supenaam Creek and the islands of Wakenaam and Leguan as the Ministry aims to scale up the delivery of health services in the region. Dr. Anthony also noted that a mobile dental boat was commissioned earlier in the year at Charity to assist residents in the Pomeroon River.
Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva said the region was in need of such a service and she is happy that the project became a reality. De Silva also said that the transferral of patients with the river ambulance will result in quicker access to care and treatment. “This is something our region needed and am happy that we advocated for this from an RDC level and it … materialized,” De Silva said.
