Dear Editor,
I write in my capacity as Registrar of the Supreme Court in response to an unsigned advertisement in your Friday, 28th October edition intituled, “Open Letter to the Chancellor of the Judiciary: Justice for Complainants’ Grievances Against Attorneys”.
In that advertisement, the writer alleges that the Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary has failed in her “legal and moral duty” to appoint the members of the Legal Practitioners’ Committee (LPC), the statutory body tasked with investigating complaints against attorneys-at-law.
I wish to correct that erroneous assertion. On 16th March, 2022, the Honourable Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag), Madam Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, reconstituted the Legal Practitioners’ Committee with the appointment of the following persons nominated to serve as members:
Mr. Robin Stoby, SC
Mr. Rafiq Khan, SC
Mr. Andrew Pollard, SC
Mr. Rajendra Poonai, SC
Ms. Carole Boston, SC
Mr. Teni Housty
Mr. Horatio Edmondson
Ms. Onassis Granville
Ms. Kim Kyte-Thomas
Ms. Mandisa Breedy
Ms. Tracy Gibson
Mr. Lyndon Amsterdam
Mr. Dionne McCammon
Ms. Konyo Sandiford
Mr. Nikhil Ramkarran
Mr. Kashir Khan
The members of the LPC have decided that it can best serve the members of the public by having the hearings conducted virtually. They have been working on mechanisms for same.
I am advised that in order to fulfill its mandate, scheduling of hearings is being done even as complaints are being received.
We urge the members of the public who have complaints and grievances regarding practicing members of the Guyana Bar to feel free to lodge those complaints with the Legal Practitioners’ Committee at the Court of Appeal Registry, 60 High Street, Kingston, Georgetown.
Yours sincerely,
Sueanna Lovell
Registrar of the Supreme Court
