A teen motorcyclist was taken into police custody on Thursday after he rode over a labourer at Charity, on the Essequibo Coast and the man later succumbed.
The Guyana Police Force said on Friday that the fatal accident occurred on Thursday at about 19:00 hours on Charity Extension Scheme Access Road.
The accident involved a Raptor motor cycle, driven by a 17-year-old, of Charity Extension Scheme, and a pedestrian, Manniram Sooklall, who was a 35-year-old labourer, of Lot 403 Charity Extension Scheme, Essequibo Coast.
The police said their enquiries disclosed that the motorcyclist was proceeding along the access road at a fast rate of speed when he “ran over something” and stopped to see what it was. The teen motorcyclist said he then discovered it was a male lying on the road with what appeared to be blood, and he panicked and drove away.
The pedestrian was later picked up in an unconscious state and conveyed to the Charity Public Hospital in a police force motor pickup. He was seen and examined by a doctor, who pronounced him dead at about 20:45 hours.
The body is presently lying in the Charity Hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The teen motorcyclist was arrested on Thursday night and was up to yesterday in custody assisting with investigation.
